

The game was originally launched with 48 cards separated in Common, Rare, Epic rarities, with regular expansions introducing new cards, rarities, ability to level up cards, purchasable emote decks, and trade tokens. The card deck consists of just 8 cards, which users can pick before the start of the match from the currently available card pool. The gameplay involves activating card spells (who can summon troops, structures, or fire magical spells), which require an appropriate number of elixirs to be played.

In addition to regular solo or duo play, Clash Royale also supports clans (with space for up to 50 players) and Clan Wars, where five clans battle with each other for the ultimate prize of rare chest items and war bounties. At the end of the 3-minute limit, the game will survey the state of all player's towers, and in the event of a tie, the game will enter overtime and sometimes into a rare Draw. Described primarily as a “tower rush” game, Clash Royale for Desktop primary mode of play are 3-minute-long 1v1 or 2v2 online matches where players are tasked to protect their defensive towers while dealing enough damage to destroy more of the opponent’s structures or bring down their King’s Tower which would result in an instant victory.
